The Week in Rugby

Posted by Niall on October 30, 2013

This week we had action from an inter-provincial derby, the final games of two cups and the sacking of a Welsh eejit. Read on for our weekly rugby digest and as always if you think we have missed anything just give us a shout in the comments below.

Leinster: This week the boys in blue entertained Connacht in the RDS. From where we were it didn’t provide much entertainment, Leinster narrowly coming away with the win in the final minuets. There were a lot of mistakes from the home side on the night and things don’t look all too sturdy heading into some crunch games with a seriously diminished squad.

With English and French Rugby teams seemingly set to breakaway from the Heineken Cup it is unsurprising that the ERC today released a brief statement after their scheduled board meeting in Dublin.

World Cup of Clubs?

Posted by Colm on August 27, 2013

It is being reported in France that Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal has made his wish a reality by arranging a February 2nd meeting between his European Champions and Super Rugby Champions the Wakaito Chiefs.

Despite ERC president Jean-Pierre Lux stating earlier this month :

“Under the terms of the European Rugby Cup participation agreement that they signed before the competition, the clubs do not have the right to play such a game as European champions especially against the winners of the Super 15, it is stated in the agreement. I totally understand that he wanted to do something, but Mr Boudjellal does not have the latitude to organise such a game. It’s a good idea”

Although I personally think the game is a great idea and would make a fantastic advertisement for the game, the proposed date of February 2nd clashes with the first round of the Six Nations. The same idea has been done in other sports, for instance in Rugby League and Football. Is it time for Union to step up to the plate?

Let us know what you think about the prospect of Leinster or any European team taking on the might of the Super Rugby Champions in the future.
